Case Study: How LiveSicilia gained granular, real-time traffic clarity with Publytics
May 25, 2026 | Author: Anna Battistella
From data sampling to full clarity: why LiveSicilia made Publytics its primary analytics lens.
TL;DR:
Company: LiveSicilia, one of Sicily's leading newsrooms.
Business model: Digital advertising, with an editorial-first approach to content strategy.
Replaced tool: Used alongside Google Analytics 4.
The challenge: Overcoming GA4's data sampling, unreliable real-time traffic source attribution, and a cluttered interface that slowed down strategic decisions.
The result: Granular, actionable real-time data by channel, a clear and accessible interface, and responsiveness (both from the platform and from the Publytics team) that is on another level.
The company: portraying Sicily as it really is
LiveSicilia is one of the island's most authoritative online newsrooms. Its mission is as straightforward as it is ambitious: to portray Sicily as it really is, covering different topics and territories across the region to uncover the hidden dynamics behind every local story.
By enriching articles with video and multimedia formats, they provide readers with multiple ways to engage with the news. Their distribution approach is equally intentional. Rather than chasing algorithmic virality, they diversify across Google, their own website, and social media (such as Facebook), always targeting readers who are still looking for real news.
The role of Data
In a publishing business where advertising revenue is the primary engine, data is structural. Yet, its value goes far beyond monetization: data is the key to understanding the reader's needs and behavior. It is what allows a newsroom to define accurate user profiles and build tailored content pathways. In order to understand in depth data's importance we spoke with Claudio, Head of Technical Operations, who claimed that:
“È stato molto importante diffonderne l’ingresso e renderlo parte integrante nella strategia: capire come interpretare un numero e soprattutto come tradurrlo in azione.”
"It was highly important to drive data adoption and make it an integral part of our core strategy: understanding how to interpret a number, and most importantly, how that it can be translated into action.”
- Claudio Zagara, Head of Technical Operations & Digital Strategy
Data, in other words, acts as the compass that helps the team navigate the unpredictability of the news cycle. Claudio captures its value simply:
“Da 0 a 100 ti dico che (il dato) è importante 90 solo perché quel 10 è tutto esperimenti, estro giornalistico e umiltà”
"On a scale of 0 to 100, I'd say data is 90% important for us. I leave that remaining 10% for journalism's raw instinct, creativity, and humility”
The challenge: sampling and uncertaintly
Before committing fully to Publytics, LiveSicilia used only Google Analytics 4. The technical limitations were familiar ones.
- Data sampling was the primary pain point. Claudio explained that while a sampled data might be acceptable for bureaucratic or compliance reporting, it introduces a layer of uncertainty for genuine internal analysis (such as understanding real market positioning or evaluating true content performance) making confident decisions impossible. Filtering and re-filtering reports, waiting for complete data that sometimes never came was a source of constant frustration.
- The second bottleneck was the real-time traffic source attribution. For a newsroom actively managing multiple distribution channels, knowing where readers are coming from in real time is the basis for every editorial and commercial decision. GA4's real-time panel provided only a vague sense of traffic origin. And in that vagueness, opportunities were being lost.
"Se un GA il pannello in tempo reale dice vagamente da dove proviene il traffico, stiamo già perdendo opportunità."
"If GA's real-time panel only tells roughly where the traffic is coming from, we are already missing opportunities."
The Solution: A trial that became indispensable
LiveSicilia initially adopted Publytics during a testing phase and what started as a trial quickly became an essential operational tool.
At the end of the trial period, Claudio strongly pushed to renew the platform.
"Lo sto usando anche in questo momento."
"I'm using it even right now, as we speak."
Keeping GA4 alongside Publytics wasn't due to a lack of confidence in the new platform, but rather a necessity to comply with specific regional reporting requirements. However, when it comes to strategic, editorial, and operational decisions, the choice is clear: Publytics is the primary lens.
What sealed it? Three things: data precision, interface clarity, and the quality of the support.
The Results: driving editorial decisions with real-time granularity and a clear user interface
What made the difference was a software designed for publishers, from the data architecture to the interface design.
1. Sources granularity in real time
The standout capability for the LiveSicilia team is Publytics' real-time traffic breakdown by source and channel. With properly configured UTM parameters, Claudio can see - instantly! - from where the traffic is arriving whether it's organic search, Facebook, Telegram, or Google Discover.
"Una funzionalità chiave: la distinzione automatica in canali di traffico, sia in tempo reale che in report, perché è un colpo d’occhio molto utile. Infatti da questo punto di vista GA4 non lo guardo più."
"One key feature is the automatic breakdown of traffic channels in both real-time and historical reports; it gives a highly effective snapshot at a glance. In fact, from that perspective, I’ve stopped checking GA4 entirely."
2. A clear interface that works across the whole newsroom
One of the most underestimated challenges in any data-driven newsroom is the interface itself. When the people acting on data aren't data specialists, a unclear dashboard may create resistance to the entire data culture you're trying to build.
Publytics addressed this directly. The clean, focused dashboard made adoption easy across functions, including on smaller screens.
"Essere in condizioni di poter leggere una dashboard chiara ed essenziale, anche da 13 pollici, è molto importante (cosa che su GA non è fattibile). Inoltre Publytics funziona perfettamente anche su Android come web app installabile da Chrome, senza discrepanze rispetto alla versione desktop: di fatto è già un’app, pur senza esserlo in senso stretto."
"Being able to read a clear, streamlined dashboard - even on a 13-inch screen - is very important (something that isn’t possible on GA). Furthermore, Publytics works perfectly on Android as a web app that can be installed from Chrome, with no differences from the desktop version: in fact, it’s already an app, even if not strictly speaking."
Claudio also highlights the annotations feature: the ability to mark significant editorial or strategic events directly on the historical timeline (not just automated Google updates) gives every user across the newsroom a shared, contextualised view of what's happening and why.
3. A platform that drives editorial decisions
The clearest measure of Publytics' impact came during a period of operational uncertainty around Google Discover. Using Publytics, the team was able to identify exactly which content categories performed consistently on Discover and which did not, enabling them to make concrete decisions about where to continue investing editorial effort and where to redirect it.
"Grazie a Publytics si può riflettere con molti più spunti su come può evolvere un giornale oggi, guardandosi meglio allo specchio e studiando come poter crescere. Rispetto al solo GA4, ora possiamo esplorare cosa e dove migliorare davvero, con una fiducia nei mezzi analitici decisamente rafforzata."
"Thanks to Publytics, we can reflect on how a newspaper can evolve today with far more insights, taking a closer look at ourselves and exploring how we can grow. Compared to GA4 alone, we can now identify exactly what and where to improve, with significantly greater confidence in our analytical tools."
4. A real support
Another recurring theme throughout LiveSicilia’s experience was the quality of support provided by the Publytics team. Compared to the often impersonal experience of large analytics platforms, Claudio emphasized the importance of having fast responses and active collaboration.
"Sono rimasto sorpreso dalla qualità dell’assistenza e da una reattività davvero fuori dal comune. Anche per chiarire semplici dubbi o curiosità, ho sempre ottenuto risposte tempestive e precise, a dimostrazione di una struttura solida, capace di rispondere perfettamente a ogni mia esigenza."
"I was incredibily surprised by the level of assistance and responsiveness I’ve found at Publytics that is on a whole different level. Even for small questions or curiosities, I got an immediate and precise answer that makes me feel there's a structure capable of meeting my needs perfectly."
Conclusion
When asked whether he'd recommend Publytics to other publishers, Claudio's answer is immediate and unqualified:
"Si assolutamente. Lo consiglierei perché da una panoramica chiara e azionabile. […] In più la prontezza nella risposta sia come assistenti che nella possibilità di un confronto attivo e continuativo."
"Yes, absolutely. I'd recommend it because it gives a clear, actionable overview. […] And the responsiveness, both in support and in the possibility of an active, ongoing dialogue, makes all the difference."
For LiveSicilia, Publytics didn't replace a tool. It replaced uncertainty.
